A very hot weekend in Cambridge. I decided to try out my new Arc Systeme release aid which has been a joy to use this week in practise. Started well Saturday morning with 58/57/58 and then went completely pear-shaped. I couldn't figure out why I was getting flyers way out left on what felt like perfectly good shots. Nothing looked to have failed on the bow, so I tried my old release aid and things looked better. Then I spotted that the top had worn off the melted bulb at the top of my d-loop. I knew the new release aid was shaped such that it pretty much rested against this bulb, but it hadn't seemed to be an issue until now. I could only surmise that whilst the bulb was rounded it was rolling along the release aid at the point of release and not affecting the shot, but when it became flattened by wear it was bouncing off the end of the release aid at the point of release. With this thought in mind, I heated the top d-loop bulb and flattened it out. Boom! Matched my pb in the afternoon session with a 693 which included an appalling last end of 54. So thank heavens I hadn't wasted my money on a sexy new release aid. Sunday was a trickier day - still gloriously hot but with an increasingly blustery right/left wind which started to vary into a headwind. Shot 686 and 679 which for the conditions I was pretty pleased with. Maybe I'll swap the sides I tie the bulbs of the d-loop to insure against future issues with the new release aid. Big thx to Richard Kerr for doing all the driving after a tough working week too. Cheers mate!

Following Shanghai, a weekend away camping at Lilleshall for the Walsall double FITA (or double 1440 as I guess we call it now). This seemed like a good idea when I booked it, but after an all-night flight back to the UK Tuesday, the prospect of a weekend under canvas wasn't too attractive if the truth be told! This seemed to be confirmed Friday night when the temperature got down to freezing and my sleeping bag was a very very cold place to be at 3am. Weather for the shoot was probably one of the best days at Lilleshall for shooting that I can remember, so I was a bit disappointed to not be putting in a big score, but all things considered a 1363 was not too shabby and put me into second place behind Chris Bell. After preparing for another Antarctic night by donning multiple layers of clothing to sleep in, I managed a good night's sleep and felt good for the Sunday. Rather fortunately, Chris Bell had only chosen to shoot the Saturday which left me in the lead which I managed to maintain from John Stubbs and scored 1374 to win the senior male compound for the weekend. Funnily enough, with hindsight, booking this after Shanghai now seems like a great idea! |
