Wow, that was a marathon weekend! First stop was Lilleshall, Shropshire for the first Tier 1 ranking event of 2018. This was a 50m qualification round with head to head matches in the afternoon. Shot a 687 to finish 12th in qualification - okay, but in this level of competition I need to be 10+ points up on that really. Head to heads went reasonably well - made 9th place shooting a 147 match on the way. That evening myself and my mate Richard motored down to Newport in South Wales as day 2 of the plan was a similar format Tier 2 ranking event at Llantarnam. What a seriously hot day that turned out to be. Really energy sapping, particularly after a tough day before. I struggled with my 1st half of qualifying, shooting 335, but picked up 2nd half with 347 to finish 1st qualifier with 682. Then, after a couple of scares on the way, picked up gold in the matchplay. So a nice bundle of national ranking points picked up this weekend. I experimented with a more open stance this weekend, but under pressure was struggling to get my shots off. This I realised was due to the shorter draw length that opening your stance gives you. I felt a bit steadier on the aim with the open stance, but the cost would be reducing my draw length and I'm not really comfortable doing that at the moment when everything else seems to be working pretty well and improving too. So, for now at least, a more closed stance and increase the training. |
